Privacy Policy

The short version

There are no accounts and no sign-in. We do not ask for your name, your email address or any payment details. We do not keep a record of the links you paste or the files you download. The list of recent links you see in the app is stored in your own browser and is never transmitted to us. We set no cookies of our own, and there is no advertising on the site.

Who is responsible

SaveThisMedia is an independent project, run by one operator rather than a company. For any question about this policy or about your data, write to hello@savethismedia.com.

What we collect, and why

Category by category, this is everything:

• The link you submit. Processed for one purpose only: to read the media addresses the platform publishes for that post and return them to you. It is used for that request and nothing else. It is not stored, not logged to a database, and not associated with you.
• Your IP address. Held in our server’s memory for about sixty seconds so that the rate limiter can stop one visitor from overwhelming the service. It is not written to a database, not used to build a profile, and it disappears when the minute has passed or when the server restarts.
• Browser and device information. We do not collect or analyse it. Your browser sends the usual request headers, as it does to any website, and our hosting provider processes them to deliver the page.
• Error and log information. When a request fails, the server may record that it failed and why - for example that a post was deleted or that a source refused us - so that faults can be diagnosed. These are short technical diagnostics, they are not tied to an identity, and they are kept only as long as the host’s standard log rotation keeps them (typically a few days).
• Analytics. We count page views with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which is a cookieless analytics service. It records that a page was viewed, roughly where in the world from, and which site linked here - as totals, not as a record of any one visitor. It sets no cookie, stores nothing in your browser, and builds no profile that follows you to another site. We cannot identify you from it, and neither can they.
• Cookies. This site sets no cookie of its own - your theme choice and your recent links are kept in local storage instead, which is described below. It also loads no third-party script that could set one.
• Account information. None, because there are no accounts. If accounts are ever introduced, this policy will be updated before they are.
• Payment information. None. The service is free and there is no payment processor. If payments are ever introduced, this policy will be updated before they are.

What is stored in your browser

Two items are written to your browser’s local storage. Neither is a cookie, and neither is ever sent to our server:

• Recent links. The last ten posts you fetched on each downloader, so you can find something again without pasting the link twice. Clearing it from the app deletes it permanently - there is no copy anywhere else.
• Theme preference. Whether you chose light or dark mode.

Clearing your browser’s site data removes both. Using the site in a private window means neither survives the session.

Media retention: none

We do not permanently store downloaded videos or photos. There is no business reason to, and the software has no code that would:

• In the ordinary case, media never touches our server at all. Your browser fetches the file directly from the platform’s own content delivery network.
• When you build a ZIP, the selected files pass through our server’s memory for the few seconds it takes to assemble the archive, and are gone when the response ends. They are never written to disk.
• When you trim a video, the media is streamed through the converter and out to you as it is produced. No temporary file is created on disk at any point.
• When you save a video’s audio as an MP3, the same applies. The audio cannot be reached without reading the video, so the video does pass through our server’s memory - but only as it is being converted, and it is gone when the response ends.
• There is therefore no temporary media store to expire and no clean-up job to run: the retention period for media is the lifetime of your request, which is seconds.

We operate no public media library. We do not sell or share downloaded media, we do not use it to train AI models, and we do not use it for advertising or marketing. That is true whether or not the site is carrying adverts: nothing you paste or download is passed to an advertising network, and it could not be, because we do not keep it.

Third-party services we actually use

• Hostinger hosts the site. Like any web host, it processes standard server request data - including your IP address and request headers - on our behalf in order to deliver the pages to you.
• The content delivery networks of X (formerly Twitter) and Snapchat serve the media itself. They are the source of the files, not our supplier; see the next section.
• Cloudflare Web Analytics counts page views. It is cookieless, and it receives no information about which links you paste.

That is the complete list. There is no payment processor, no error-monitoring service and no database or object-storage provider, because the service uses none of those. Third-party providers that we do use may process the limited information necessary to provide their service to us, and nothing more.

Media loaded from other domains

Previews and downloads point at the content delivery networks of X (formerly Twitter) and Snapchat. When your browser loads one of those files it contacts that network directly, so that network can see your IP address in the same way any site you visit can. We deliberately send no referrer information with those requests, so the source is not told which page you came from. What those companies then do with that information is governed by their own privacy policies, not by this one.

Data security

We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect the little information that passes through the service: traffic is served over HTTPS, the server keeps no persistent store of personal data, and access to the hosting account is restricted. No online service can be guaranteed to be completely secure, and we do not claim otherwise.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you have rights over your personal data. If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, the GDPR and equivalent laws give you the right to:

• ask for access to the personal data we hold about you;
• ask for it to be corrected;
• ask for it to be deleted;
• ask us to restrict, or object to, how it is processed;
• ask for information about how and why it is processed, and on what legal basis;
• withdraw your consent at any time where consent is the legal basis for processing - and to have the withdrawal be as easy as giving it was;
• lodge a complaint with your national supervisory authority.

If you are in California, the CCPA and CPRA give you the right to know what is collected and to ask that it be deleted. We do not sell or share personal information, and we do not discriminate against anyone for exercising a privacy right.

In practice we hold almost nothing that could identify you: the recent-links list is on your device and you can clear it yourself, and IP addresses are discarded within about a minute. Our legal basis for that brief processing is our legitimate interest in keeping the service available and free of abuse. Children

This service is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the revision date at the top of the page changes with it. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the revised policy.
